Solve: first I worked out what 6×3 is. The answer is 18, So I write an eight and carry the one. Now I have to work out what 3x? is, remembering that I have an extra one to add on, and it must equal something with a three in the ones column.

I already know that 3×4=12, and if I add a one, it would be 13! Perfect! So I write down a 4 in between the 2 and 6. Then I carry the one from the thirteen.

Now all I have to do is work out what 2×3 is, and I already know that is 6, plus the 1=7.
